Schedule for Class 5, 8 scholarship exams announced

Lahore, Oct 26: Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) has issued schedule of primary (Class -V) and middle standard (Class-VIII) scholarship examinations.

A press statement issued here on Thursday stated the scholarship exams for Class-V would start from November 19 and conclude on November 21. Scholarship exams for class-VIII would commence on November 10 and conclude on November 15, the statement added.

Candidates have been advised to reach the examination centres half an hour before start of the exams. It is to be noted that Primary and Middle Standard Examinations 2007 scheduled to be held in May were postponed following press reports about leakage of question papers during the primary examination.

In this regard, Punjab Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi had ordered an inquiry into the matter and the primary exams were immediately postponed while middle standard exams were postponed in anticipation of the similar happening.

At that time, Additional Secretary (Academics) Akram Chaudhry of the Punjab Education department was tasked to probe the matter and to submit a detailed report to Punjab chief secretary Salman Siddique for initiation of a proper inquiry.

The probe report was submitted to the chief secretary in August, however, no progress has so far been reported in this connection. Expressing their apprehensions over the delay, academic circles and stakeholders have urged the authorities to expedite the process of inquiry to bring officials involved to justice.

They argue that millions of rupees were spent to conduct the exams in which almost 1.2 million candidates had appeared from across Punjab but the whole exercise flopped owing to negligence of few individuals. They added accountability of such elements is must to avoid any such incident in the future from happening again.

It is worth mentioning here that both the exams were postponed and students were promoted to next classes without exams. However, later it was decided that scholarship exams would be held in all districts of the province to select eligible students to award scholarships to them after the exams. The News
