6000 Benevolent Fund scholarships still pending
Lahore, Oct 23: Provincial Benevolent Fund Board has stopped some 6000 educational scholarships of government servants after raising minor objections on their applications. Benevolent Fund officials warned that if applicants did not complete the documents required by the board such applications would be rejected.

According to details the Provincial Benevolent Fund Board had invited applications for education scholarships from government servants working in grade 17 and above in March 2009. After scrutinizing the applications Benevolent Fund Board raised objections over 6000 applications that concerned persons had not completed required documents with their applications. Benevolent Fund officials dispatched the letters to applicants for submitting the required documents, in respond to Benevolent Fund letters some applicants completed all requirements but thousands of government servants did not fulfil the requirements for educational scholarships till the date.

Most of applicants did not submit their pay slips, educational certificates, copies of departmental cards so the process to issue the scholarships amount was stopped, sources said. The Benevolent Fund Board has fixed November 30-2009 last date for submitting the missing documents and if applications not provided the required information their applications would be rejected, sources added. When this correspondent contacted Provincial Benevolent Fund Board, Waseem Ahmed Saif, administrator of the board he said some 14000 educational scholarships have been dispatched to government servants and board officials have issued the scholarships amount on daily basis. He said they were also ready to pay the scholarships against pending applications but applications should fulfill the conditions for this purpose. Students' cars banned at PU
Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) has banned the entry of students' vehicles and set up three main parking lots in the New Campus to avoid any terrorist attack.

This was decided in a meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran that was attended by the deans and the administrative officers to review the security measures on Thursday.

It was decided that three big parking lots would be established at the ends of the New Campus near Gate No 2, Islamic Centre and IBIT where students and visitors would park their vehicles. No vehicle would be allowed entry to the premises of the campus. Only three gates including Gate No 1 and 2 and Islamic Centre gate would be used for entry and exit. Motorcycles and vehicles of teachers and employees would also not be allowed to enter in the campus without special stickers issued by the university.

Shuttle bus service: The meeting decided that the students and visitors would reach their departments through the university 'shuttle buses' which would run inside the campus. The shuttle bus service would pick and drop students and visitors from these parking stands and gates to their respective departments, hostels and administration blocks. Parents would pick and drop their children at the main gates.

The meeting also decided that the security arrangements on campus would be beefed up by walk-through gates, closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras, metal detectors, and round-the-clock mobile squad teams. Nobody would enter the premises without university cards.

The meeting also decided to beef up the security in the hostels and the Old Campus. It was decided that teachers along with students and employees would be asked to keep an eye on their surroundings and immediately inform the security centre in case of any suspicious activity or person. GC University security arrangements finalised
Lahore: GC University Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab has discussed in detail the security arrangements in the university with the heads of all administrative and academic departments on Thursday.

On this occasion, the university's staff members suggested that special lectures should be held in cooperation with the Punjab government to aware the students about the situation and methods of their personal security. It was also decided that special emergency exercises and demonstrations should be held in all the universities in cooperation with the government.

The VC told the staff members about the existing security arrangements, measures being taken after the recent terror attacks on International Islamic University Islamabad and future security plans. The departments' heads made a large number of suggestions about the security of the students and the staff. Dr Khalid welcomed all the proposals and necessary orders were issued for their implementation.

Speaking on the occasion, the VC said the university would put in all possible efforts for the security of its students and staff members. He asked the students and staff members not to worry, saying, "We will keep our faith as strong as ever."

Dr Khalid Aftab says there is a dire need to change our attitudes, adding "we have to put some restrictions on ourselves for our personal security and the security of our children and colleagues."

Students go for schools providing food aid
Mansehra: Students in Tanawal and Garhi Habibullah areas of the district are quitting schools where food packages are not provided under a plan of the education department supported by the World Food Programme, and getting admission to the ones offering such aid, it is learnt.

This has left many schools at the brink of closure as most of students have quit.

The education department in collaboration with the World Food Programme has been distributing wheat and edible oil packages among students of specified schools in Tanawal and Gari Habibullah for the last many months.

A teacher of a deprived school in Gari Habibullah, who requested not to be named said that the discriminatory attitude of the education department had destroyed the educational setup in the district because students were getting admission to schools where the aid package was being given.

He said the assistance programme should either be stopped or extended to all the schools in the selected areas.

Naseer Anwar of Gari Habibullah said the food aid was being given to students of the Thalhata area, but not to students of the adjoining area of Karnol.

According to him, many students had left schools in Karnol.

He said students of Maktab schools run by the education department and seminaries were not included in the assistance programme. "Is it not a conspiracy to attract seminary students to government-run schools?" he posed a question. Dawn
