PU allowed to continue harassment case probe
Lahore: The Lahore High Court Friday allowed Punjab University to continue inquiry into a sexual harassment case by nullifying Provincial Ombudsperson about stopping Punjab University from conducting inquiry. Punjab University administration was conducting fresh inquiry against its employee Ilyas Moeen Bhatti on the complaint of a female employee wherein she had accused him of sexual harassment. Meanwhile, Bhatti approached Provincial Ombudsperson against the inquiry and the ombudsperson stopped PU administration from holding proceedings of inquiry committee and summoned record of the relevant case. However, PU moved the LHC against ombudsperson order through a writ petition. The counsel argued Provincial Ombudsperson did not have power to stop PU from holding inquiry, hence her order was illegal.

At this, Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti summoned Director/Registrar of Provincial Ombudsperson with record. After the perusal of record and hearing the arguments, the court nullified the orders of Provincial Ombudsperson and ordered the university to complete inquiry within 15 days. The court also directed Bhatti to join inquiry proceedings.
