Farah Dogar case | PU holiday, MA result

Farah Dogar case and Mr. Nawaz Sharif
Dec 19: Nawaz Sharif has certainly dropped a bomb shell by making a most astounding public statement that he was offered a trade-off by a confidante of the government promising a favourable verdict in his and his brother's cases pending before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in consideration for his not pressing for the resignation of the chief justice in Farah Dogar's case. Coming from the head of the second most powerful political party of the country it is an extremely serious allegation, to say the least.

Mr Sharif has, however, chosen not to name the 'messenger', which is not only creating doubts giving rise to speculations but also sort of suggesting manipulation of a pre-emptive strategy for thwarting the Supreme Court verdict in anticipation should the merit of the case warrant it to go against the brothers. Mian sahib must, therefore, disclose the identity of the messenger to lend further and complete credence to his statement. Col (r) Riaz Jafri, Rawalpindi (The News)

Students want to know who killed Daniel Pearl Washington: A group of university students working on a project aimed at unearthing the truth about American reporter Daniel Pearl's murder in Karachi in 2002 has filed a suit seeking release of relevant CIA records.

The students were assigned by project director Asra Nomani, Pearl's colleague at the Wall Street Journal and living in Karachi when the brutal killing took place, to find out who killed the American reporter and why. The Pearl Project, attached to the Centre for Public Integrity, filed a lawsuit in US district court seeking release of records, which it believes the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Defence and five other federal agencies have improperly withheld. They are seeking FBI files on "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, because Pearl was working on a story about Reid and his Pakistani handler when he was kidnapped. According to a report in the Washington Post, the idea for the project began in the summer of 2002, after four men were convicted in Pakistan in connection with Pearl's death. Daily Times
