Karachi University new BCom exams schedule

KU to hold BCom exams after Eid
Karachi, Dec 4: The University of Karachi has postponed BCom exams to a date after Eid-ul-Azha, falling here on December 9.

However, all other papers including those of BA, BSc and BDS exams scheduled for Thursday would be held as per plan, the university's controller of examinations Prof Maqsood Hussain said on Wednesday.

Biochemistry exam of MBBS Part-A, which was postponed on Dec 1 due to the law and order situation, would be held on Dec 5, he said, adding that the centre and time of the exam would remain the same.

Besides, he said, the schedule of degree class exams to be held on Dec 13 would remain unchanged.

About some proposed changes in examination centres for regular candidates of BCom exams, Prof Hussain said the names of new centres would be notified within a couple of days so that candidates could know about those much before resumption of their exams.

Relocation of the examination centres was proposed by female candidates and their parents, who complained that the examination centres were far from their residences and a few of those were located in areas that recently witnessed violence.

Sindh Edu dept to get further $300m assistance from WB
Karachi: The World Bank (WB) has hinted at the possibility of providing a further $300 million to the Sindh Education Department for uplift of education standards of the province, learnt on Wednesday.
This was discussed at a meeting held last week between a WB delegation and Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq. The WB has already provided a loan of $100 million to the education department and the additional financial assistance will be utilized for a newly initiated project called the School Education Reform Program (SERP).

Amongst the aims of the SERP, first is to increase enrollment rates in primary, middle and secondary schools from 48 percent, 18 percent and 12 percent to 59 percent, 22 percent and 14 percent, respectively, by 2009-10. The second aim is to raise the percentage of girls in primary and middle schools of rural areas from 36 percent and 28 percent to 40 percent to 31 percent, respectively, till 2009-10.

Furthermore, the SERP also aims to increase the transition rate of rural girls from primary to middle schools from 47 percent to 50 percent by 2009-10. To ensure the success of the SERP, the reform agenda will focus on improvisation of fiscal sustainability and the effectiveness of public expenditure, improving education sector management, improving access to quality schooling and, most importantly, improving teaching standards.

According to Education department officials, discussions regarding the proposed loan are in progress. Sindh Education Secretary Rizwan Ahmed Memon said that another WB team will be visiting next month to finalize the matter and expressed confidence that the loan will go through. Daily Times
