Prof Shaikh, who is also the dean of surgery and allied sciences in the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), had been made principal after posting of Prof Dr Assadullah Mahar as acting vice chancellor of the SMBBMU on Nov 26, the sources said.

Professor Shaikh confirmed on Monday about submitting his resignation to the acting vice chancellor of the SMBBMU on Jan 4. But it was not accepted yet, he said.

Students affiliated with different sister organisations of political parties had developed a habit of forcibly changing the date and venue of professional examinations, he said.

How long he could tolerate such indecent behaviour of students in the absence of any support from the highups, he said.

However, a source said that the SMBBMU and its constituent institution Chandka Medical College were confronting financial crisis and regular salaries for December released in January had been paid from the self-finance funds of the college.
