Teachers' attendance in Khyber schools improves
Landi Kotal: Teachers' attendance at government schools has improved considerably thanks to some punitive measures taken by the Khyber Agency education office against absentee teachers.
According to agency education officer Ateeq ur Rehman continuous surprise raids at randomly selected schools in Jamrud and Landi Kotal helped in tracking down habitual absentee teachers.
He said that a number of both male and female teachers were found absent from their duties for several months while some of them had deputed relatives in their place on monthly salaries.
"Services of more than 70 teachers were terminated after their failure to respond to show cause notices within stipulated time," he said and added that one-day salary was also deducted from the salaries of the teachers who were found absent on the day of visit to their schools by the inspection teams.
Mr Rehman said a number of terminated teachers tried to muster support of local elders and civil society members for their reinstatement and reimbursement of the deducted salaries by accusing the agency education officer of unlawfully victimising them on personal grounds.
Some of teachers, he added, went to the extant of stealing textbooks from the agency education office and selling them in the open market. Moreover, he said, these teachers accused the AEO of selling the textbooks in the market which were to be provided to primary school students free of cost.
The agency education official said an inquiry into the case revealed that some teachers terminated from their jobs on disciplinary grounds were behind the sale of textbooks in the open market.
Meanwhile, Mr Rehman said a female teacher named Khadija Bibi was on Tuesday terminated for drawing salary for over 20 years without performing duties.
He said that Ms Khadija got herself posted as teacher at the government girls' primary school, Sultan Khel in Landi Kotal using fake documents.
"After attaining the age of superannuation, Ms Khadija deputed another female teacher, Fareeda Bibi, her aunt, as assistant agency education officer (female) in her place and regularly drew salary at home," said Mr Rehman. Dawn
