When can I sit for USMLE Steps exam?
United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a computer based administered exam, which is a three-step series exam, required to pass by medical graduates to be able to practice medicine in USA. One can sit for Step 1 and Step 2 exams at any time during medical school study, provided that the candidate fulfills the given eligibility requirements for any of these exams. For Step 3, one should have successfully cleared Step 1 and 2 exams.
Indian or Pakistani students can sit for Step 1 at the end of their second year in medical school, provided their medical school meets new recognition requirements. Step 2 is usually taken after third year of medical school, because during this ideal phase medical content is fresh in candidate’s mind and thus easy to recall during the exam. Step 3 can be taken once you have successfully passed Step 1, 2, and have completed your medical school or be near completion of your first year post graduation training in an accredited US medical education program.
Indian and Pakistan candidates can take the USMLE Step 1 & 2 from their own country through USMLE authorized Prometric test centres. While, step 3 can be given only in USA.
