If I fail USMLE exam, when may I take it again?
If you fail or do not complete a USMLE Step or Step Component and want to retake it, first, you should be careful about USMLE re-take limits. You must reapply by submitting a new application and fee.
- You may take the failed or incomplete Step or Step Component no more than three times within a 12-month period. It’s like you should have 12 months gap in between your first and fourth attempt, as well as, it should have atleast six months gap in between your last attempt and new attempt, this include your failed or your incomplete attempts.
- You are not allowed to retake a step once passed, except while complying with time limit applied by US physician licensing authority or authority which has recognition by the USMLE program, but such retake may have implications on Step 3 eligibility.
