What is CPSP?
The main functions of the CPSP (College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan) are directed towards the promotion of the practice of general medicine, surgery and other specialities, and conduct examinations for the award of postgraduate degrees of FCPS and MCPS.
The CPSP has played an important role in training its Fellows in Research Methodology dissertation writing and computer orientation for both trainers and trainee through workshops. Hundreds of MCPS and FCPS have graduated from this College. To ensure examination process in compare with international recognition, college invites examiners Royal Colleges of England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Middle East, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. Joint Committee of Higher Medical training of England, which represents UK’s all Royal Colleges has recognised the Fellowship of CPSP at par with its MCPS.
The US Boards of Internal Medicine, FRCP Canada for the purpose of entry on the specialists register maintained by the General Medical Council, UK.
The Saudi Council for Health Specialities also recognises FCPS of the College at par with MRCP and FRCS awarded by Royal Colleges of UK. Besides, the colleges in collaboration with WHO has launched an awareness programme on reproductive health issues and to develop a curricula for postgraduate and undergraduate medical education and development of learning material for the trainers.
The Department of Medical Education of the College through a series of workshops has trained over 12,000 teachers to update them with new methodologies. In 1996, this department was redesigned as “WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Educational Development of Health Personnel.”
It has also been working on to extend co-operation to Afghanistan in provision and improvement of healthcare services.

Who is Eligible to sit for this exam?
- MBBS or equivalent qualification registered with the PMDC.
- One year house job in an institution recognized by the CPSP, out of which six months should be in your particular specialization field. Deficiency in the house job period could be compensated by equal time in residency.
- Two years residency training in any of the CPSP recognized institutions.
Is there any exemption in duration of training for Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Otorhinolaryngology specialization?
The training of the diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (i.e. DGO, DRCOG, Graded specialist from the armed forces) and in Otorhinolaryngology (i.e. DLO, Graded Specialist from the armed forces) will be accepted as equivalent to a maximum of one year training (irrespective of the number of diplomas acquired) towards MCPS requirements.
Who is exempted from FCPS (part 1) exam and how can I process my exemption request?
CPSP grant exemption from FCPS Part-I to those applications who have acquired the following qualifications:
- MRCP (for medicine specialization only) and FRCS (for other specialization) from all the Royal Colleges of UK and Ireland.
- Diplomate American Board of Specialities.
- FCPS Part-I, Bangladesh.
An application for exemption from FCPS Part-I must be submitted to the CPSP with all the relevant documents and a bank draft of fee (non refundable processing fee).
After due verification and payment of the prescribed fee, the College shall grant exemption.
In all other cases after proper scrutiny and processing, the College will decide acceptance or rejection of the request for exemption from FCPS Part-I on an individual case basis.
All applicants who are allowed exemption will be issued an Exemption certificate on payment of fee (exemption certificate fee). A copy of this certificate will have to attached with the application to the Research & Training Monitoring Cell (RTMC) of the CPSP, for registration as FCPS Part-II trainee and later with the application for appearing in FCPS Part-II examination.
What is the examination schedule?
The FCPS Part-I examinations will be held thrice a year in the months of MARCH, JULY and NOVEMBER.
- Theory examinations are held in different cities of the country usually at Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Multan, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Quetta and Hyderabad.
- English shall be medium of examination.
- Any change in the centers, dates and format of the examination will be notified by the College before the examination.
- Each successful candidate in the FCPS Part-I examination will be issued a latter to enable him/her to seek his/her placement for training in a recognized training institute.
- A competent authority appointed by the College has the power to debar any candidate from any examination if it is satisfied that such a candidate is not a fit person to take the College examination because of using unfair means/misconduct or other disciplinary reasons.
What is the format of examination?
The examination will consist of two theory papers (Paper-I & Paper-II) Paper-II consisting of 75 MCQs (multiple true and false type).
Each paper of FCPS Part-I (MCQ type) will be divided into three well defined sections of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology including other allied basic medical sciences. A candidate would be required to secure a minimum percentage in each of the three sections separately besides passing in aggregate.
